We Fed An Island By José Andrés

As the title suggests, this book is a journey of a chef whose only desire is to help people in a devastated land. Hurricane Maria (2018)  was brutal enough to uproot everything in Puerto Rico.

The book begins with describing the plight of an US territory when a category 4 hurricane makes landfall. When everyone else was glued to their TV or mobile to keep up with any updates, few people chose to help the needy. Chef José started on this remarkable journey with less than few thousand dollars. The book narrates how right people, right connections and the right attitude can make fast progressions. How a team overcomes each and every obstacle in serving humanity.

The book which I thought would be only about the story of how people came together to feed an island, soon drifted to politics. Yes, it is inevitable to separate politics from any governance issue. However, it seemed the book gave a lot more weight to politics than it deserved.

Few takings from the book :

  • Any action taken for a greater cause will always succeed.
  • People will join in when the reasons are right and objectives are simple.
  • Better governance can make a huge difference. But no governance never means things can’t be done.

Only question that stays with me is :

Can there be a World Kitchen that ensures no soul sleeps hungry???
